Why You Shouldn’t Buy a Goldendoodle?

Even though Goldendoodle owners may agree that Goldendoodles are a great dog for family, but it does not mean that this breed is suitable for anyone. It is because there are some reasons why you should not buy this breed according to the Happy Doodles site as you are able to read below.

Goldendoodles Have High Energy

It is important for you to note that Goldendoodles are intelligent and have high energy. The energy level that they have comes from Poodle and Golden Retriever sides of the family. Originally, these purebred dogs were developed to spend time in the fields or water to chase down their owners’ catch. To do this, a lot of energy is needed for the dogs and also the stamina.

Even though Goldendoodles are companion dogs now, but they still have the same amount of energy that was bred into the parent breeds years ago. The energy that they have needs to be burned off every day which means that they need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. If Goldendoodles do not get adequate exercise and mental stimulation, they will start to develop bad habits. Or, they can entertain themselves in ways that you do not want to, such as rummaging through the garbage, barking at people or chewing on a shoe. If you are an active person who can take the dog with you when you run, hike or socialize, this dog may be suitable for you, but if you are not that kind of person and you or your family are busy and cannot pay attention to a dog, this dog is not for you.

Why You Shouldn't Buy a Goldendoodle

Goldendoodles Are Expensive

The demand for Goldendoodles is high so that it influences the cost of this dog. Not only that, this breed will also cost you more for yearly maintenance than a Golden Retriever. As you know that all dogs need food and visits to the vet. However, these needs for Goldendoodles require higher cost. Besides, you have to buy special brushes and combs to maintain their fur in between grooming sessions.

However, you also have to note that the cost depends on where you live and how big the Goldendoodle is. Usually, a visit to the groomer can cost around $65 to over $100 and they need to be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. Let’s say that you add that up for a year. If so, it will cost you at least $600. However, this cost can be kept down by making sure that they are not matted and by selecting smaller Goldendoodles. Grooming can also be done by yourself, but the initial cost of equipment is around $1,000. The important thing that you need to know is that patience and skill are needed if you want to groom a dog.

Goldendoodles Need a Lot of Social Interaction

Poodle and Golden Retriever as the parent of Goldendoodles were originally developed to work with people in the fields of Germany, Scotland and France. So, their desire to be with people and to please people are still reflected in Goldendoodles where you will see that these dogs are very sociable and a great family dog. They can be happy if you are able to spend time with the attention that they want. However, if you are a busy person who has to work long hours and it requires you to leave the pup home alone, the Goldendoodle will be bored and even depressed. As a result, they will show bad behaviours where they will destroy things at home and they will suffer from separation anxiety.

Goldendoodles Can Suffer from Separation Anxiety

Goldendoodles are friendly so that they are prone to suffer from separation anxiety when they are left alone. It is because Goldendoodles are not the types of dogs which can be left alone for a long time.

This breed needs to be around people most of the time and can be a good family dog when the family is around, but it can be an issue for an active family who is always on the move, except if the owner can take the dog with them.

When you have to leave the dog because of your work, you can send the dog to doggy day care to avoid the dog suffering from separation anxiety. However, it is important for you to note that sending the dog to a doggy day care is expensive.

Goldendoodles Can Cause Allergy

It is true that technically doodles are hypoallergenic. However, it is important for you to note that hypoallergenic means that the dog is less likely to cause an allergic reaction. It means that it does not guarantee that a person will not be allergic to the dog. Nevertheless, there are a lot of people with allergies who can live with a doodle without suffering daily allergy symptoms. But of course, not all people are the same and not all Goldendoodles have the same type of fur.

For your information, pet allergies are caused by a protein that can be found in a pet’s dander, saliva and urine.

Goldendoodles Are Not Guard Dogs

Are you looking for a guard dog to keep watch your home? If so, Goldendoodles are not suitable for you because this breed is not the right breed for doing the job. As explained earlier, this breed is very friendly and they will welcome a stranger rather than keeping them out when the stranger visits your home.

Goldendoodles Are Prone to Certain Medical Issues

People believe that Goldendoodles are healthier than purebred dogs because of hybrid vigor. However, it is important for you to note that it does not always happen. As you know that Poodle and Golden have the same health issues such as Hip Dysplasia and gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) complex which is known as bloat. So, there is the possibility that they can suffer from these health conditions.

Besides these reasons, the other reasons why you should not have Goldendoodles are they are high maintenance dogs and can be mouthy. And of course if you are a muslim, another reason why you should not have a Goldendoodle is because as a muslim, it is forbidden to have a dog.
